G6 to G10

What are 'courses' at Beehive Studio?

Courses run once a week for a full term of 9-10 weeks. Each session builds on the last. Courses for older students (grade 6+) often focus more heavily on technique, and allow students freedom to explore media and approaches that interest them.

For our grade 6-8 set courses may focus on specific interests or take a more general approach. Please read the descriptions carefully before signing up to make sure you choose the right program for you.

Portrait Drawing for Teens

Class: Portrait Drawing for Teems   Age: 12-15 (grades 6-9)     Tuesday's, 7 - 8.30pm, for 6 weeks (no class October 31st)

Our teen art class series is designed for young people who want to develop a toolbox of more formal art skills, in a range of media. We firmly believe anyone can learn these skills, and as such our focus is hands on learning, and process over product. All skill levels and experience are welcome here.

Pencil Drawing and Portraits:

Taught by celebrated local artist Sarah Lacy, and using a (clothed!) live model in the studio each week, this class is intended to give students a solid foundation in portraiture by teaching head structure, individual likeness and light and shade.

You will leave with a better understanding of:

  • The shape of the head and where the features sit in the face

  • How to make your portraits look more three-dimensional

  • Light and shade

  • How to draw eyes, mouth, nose, ears and hair correctly

  • How to make your portrait look like the person you're drawing

This workshop is a combination of demonstration and practice time. During practice time, I will spend one-on-one time with each student, giving guidance and support.

Sarah Marie Lacy is an award-winning artist and teacher based in Ottawa. She works in oil and pencil, creating portraits and figurative art. She trained in France under master artists for over 2 years and is part of a 500 year lineage stretching back to Renaissance Italy. She also teaches adult classes at her studio, The Drawing Room. When she isn't painting, she hangs out with her 3-legged cat, obsesses over dinosaurs and drinks (a lot of!) tea.

* Please note, students will be asked to bring some basic drawing supplies to this class.
